(Maria del Pilar)This paper presents a qualitative analysis of the possibility of implementing seismic response control techniques in buildings in Colombia. Given the current local conditions in engineering and construction in the country, herein are presented the main reasons why it is considered that the passive control of structures would be the most suitable technique to be implemented in Colombia. Desirable features on the fabrication and application of metallic energy dissipators are exposed, and metallic buckling-restrained braces (BRB) dissipators are presented as one viable option for the protection and control for structural damage of buildings in the country.Publicación Acceso abierto Lecciones del concurso de puentes EIA(2013-10-21) Duque-Uribe, M. P. (Maria del Pilar)The history, evolution and experience of the bridge contest carried out every year by the Antioquia School of Engineering (EIA) is exposed. The basic structural systems used for bridges are described, the weak points of every system are brought out and some of the contest models are analyzed, according to their structural system, in the way they fault. (Maria del Pilar)Seismic engineering has been responsible of proposing design methods to ensure that structures behave according to defined limit states during their lifetime and to fulfill the function for which they were designed. This article proposes a methodology to be applied to the design of steel storage racks based on a design philosophy for seismic performance, considering the demands for seismic design in Colombia. This article gives elements to analyze their structural behavior for different seismic demands, defined according to the use they will have and leaving an open door to make suggestions and adjustments as may be required to existing designs to ensure the meeting of the performance objectives proposed for the structure, improving the efficiency of the rack’s designs, their market competitiveness, and in turn obtaining safer structures.Publicación Acceso abierto Sistema de gestión de las reclamaciones posventa en empresas de construcción(2014-05-07) Duque-Uribe, M. (Juan Camilo)This paper proposes a management system for the after sale claims applied to housing construction companies but also valid to any type of company. The system includes a map of the claim process with its respective forms and documents, a classification and analysis methodology of the after sale claims information and the definition of the measure ratios calculated from the claims. It is presented an overview of the energy balance concept in a structural system; it is also discussed the types of energy and its role into the total energy dissipation. A. (Juan Andrés); Duque-Uribe, M. P. (Maria del Pilar)This paper presents general aspects of the present situation of the use of seismic response-control techniques in Colombian buildings. The most prevalent techniques used worldwide are identified, and the results of a survey conducted among Colombian structural design engineers aimed at detecting some of the reasons why these techniques have not had a significant applicability in the country are presented. The results of the survey reveal that Colombia is still far from being a leading country in the application of seismic response control techniques, and that most entities and practitioners involved in building planning either do not know these techniques or are not well aware of economical benefits as well as improved structural performance. Finally, based on experiences gained in other countries, the use of these techniques in structural design for Colombia buildings is encouraged.
